A guy in Nestor called me on a weeknight. His 2008 Avalanche was sitting in the driveway and he had one key left. It had been his only key for about two years, and that night it stopped starting the truck.
He turned it over and over. The engine would catch for a second and then die. He thought it was a fuel problem at first, then noticed the security light on the dash staying lit after that brief start. That blinking or steady security indicator on these GM trucks from this era is the immobilizer telling you it did not recognize the transponder. The blade was fine. The chip side had failed.

I pulled up to his driveway with my gear, connected to the OBD port, and ran the security PIN read against the body control module. Once I had the PIN the rest was a controlled process: cut a new key to match his ignition, program the transponder to the truck's immobilizer, and verify the start. The security light went out and it ran clean.
He mentioned he had almost called a tow truck to move a truck that started and died in his own driveway. That tow would have cost him money just to relocate the problem. Doing it on-site in Nestor meant none of that. Job done before 10pm.
