A customer at her home in Rancho Bernardo had a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche with a cracked flip key. The shell had split at the hinge and the blade was wobbling loose. She went to the dealer and they quoted $291 for a complete new key, cut and programmed. What they didn't mention is that her chip and circuit board were perfectly fine. She just needed a new shell and a fresh blade.
Your Avalanche uses a Transponder Key, which is a plastic housing with 3 buttons on the face, a flip-out blade that locks into position when you press the release, a CR2032 battery inside for the remote functions, and an ID46 transponder chip that communicates with the car's immobilizer every time you start it.
I met her at her garage near 4S Ranch and brought replacement flip key shells and my B106 Lishi to verify the blade cut was still accurate before swapping shells. Her fob, FCC ID , had the same cracking pattern I see on dozens of Chevy flip keys. The plastic fatigues at the hinge after a few years of pocket carry. I moved her working circuit board and chip into a fresh shell, cut a new blade to match, and tested everything.
She paid about $121. The dealer wanted $291 for a full replacement when all she needed was a shell swap. The electronics inside were fine.
