He was at a taco shop off Bernardo Center Drive when his backpack disappeared. Someone grabbed it while he was at the counter. Keys, wallet, phone, the whole thing. He borrowed the cashier's phone, called the police, then his girlfriend, then me.

His 2011 Avalanche was sitting in the lot with zero keys to its name. His girlfriend called the dealer while he waited. They said they could order a key, but the truck would need to be towed in, the process would take three to five business days, and they recommended rekeying the ignition since the stolen key could still open the doors. I got there that evening. All-keys-lost is a different job than cutting a spare. When a working key already exists, you add to the existing key memory. When every key is gone, you wipe the memory entirely so the stolen key becomes dead to the immobilizer, then you enroll new keys from scratch. That means the stolen key can still physically enter the lock, but the truck will not start for whoever has it.

I accessed the body control module through the diagnostic port, cleared the old key data, and programmed two fresh transponder keys. Cut both blades to the vehicle on site. Had him holding two working keys before the police called back with a report number.

He drove home that night. The dealer route would have cost him a tow fee, days without his truck, and a bill that made his eyes water. He paid a fraction of that and left the parking lot under his own power.
