2003 Lexus LX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2003 Lexus LX?

The programming does not degrade over time. Once the transponder is registered to the immobilizer, that relationship is stable for the life of the vehicle under normal conditions. The remote buttons are a different story. The rubber pad on early 2000s Lexus remote head keys does wear out with heavy daily use, usually showing up as buttons that need a harder press before they register. That is a housing issue, not a programming issue.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Our work is covered under warranty. That said, on a 2003 LX, if a freshly programmed key goes dead on the transponder side, the first thing to check is whether a second key was used in the vehicle repeatedly after programming. On some immobilizer systems from this generation, consistently starting the car with a different key while a newly registered key sits unused can cause that second key to behave erratically.

Q: I have a spare key for my 2003 LX but I have never used it. Will it still work?

If it was programmed when it was made and never erased, yes. The transponder registration does not expire from sitting unused. The remote battery, though, is almost certainly dead after sitting for years. CR1616 cells have a shelf life, and a fob that has been in a drawer since 2005 is not going to have a working remote even if everything else is fine. Swap the battery first before assuming the spare key is a problem.

Q: Can I add a third key to my 2003 Lexus LX on my own, or does it always need a professional?

This generation of Lexus does have an onboard key registration procedure that some owners have completed without dealer equipment, provided at least one working key is already in hand. The process involves a specific sequence using the ignition and the existing key, and it is documented in owner forums for this platform. The catch is that it has to go right the first time.

2003 Lexus LX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working out of the Cedros Design District area on a slow Tuesday when the call came in. A guy had been driving his 2003 Lexus LX and the key just stopped unlocking the doors remotely. The key still turned, the car still started, but the lock and unlock buttons were dead. He figured the battery had finally given out.

He had already stopped at a pharmacy and grabbed a CR2032 because that is what the guy behind the counter guessed it took. It did not fit right. He forced the cover back on anyway. By the time I pulled up, the fob housing had a small crack along the seam from being pried open with a flathead, and the battery was sitting at an angle.

I carry CR1616 cells because I run into this swap constantly on early 2000s Lexus remote head keys. Correct battery, seated properly, cover clicked shut without force. Buttons came back immediately. Tested all three, confirmed range front and rear of the vehicle.

The crack in the housing was minor but enough to let moisture in over time, so I transferred everything into a fresh shell while I was there. Same key blade, same transponder, same programmed remote electronics. Took maybe twenty-five minutes total.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a full replacement key with programming on his last visit for something unrelated. This job was a fraction of that, and he left with a housing that was actually intact.

Lexus LX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 2003 Lexus LX?▼

We use OEM-specification blanks that are built to match the factory remote head key for this vehicle. On a 2003 LX, the remote and the transponder chip are both housed in the same key unit, so the blank has to be right on both counts: correct blade profile for the ignition and door locks, correct chip type so the immobilizer accepts it, and correct remote electronics so all three buttons work at proper range.
