A woman called me from the Las Americas Area on a weekday morning. She had a showing to get to and her 2005 LX would not respond to the key at all. No lock, no unlock, nothing. She had already tried the key in the door and the vehicle let her in manually, but when she sat down and turned the ignition, the engine cranked and died. Cranked and died again.
She was not panicking, but she was close.
I got to her in the Las Americas Area in under 30 minutes. The remote head key looked fine from the outside, but when I opened it up, the CR1616 inside was the original Toyota battery. On a 2005. That battery was older than some of the cars I work on.
I swapped the cell, cleaned the contacts, and reseated everything. The remote came back immediately. But the engine was still stalling on start, which told me the immobilizer had logged a fault from the repeated failed crank attempts. Connected through the OBD port, cleared the fault, cycled the key, and the LX started and idled like nothing had happened.
She asked if I needed anything else from her. I told her just to go make her showing.
The dealer had quoted her a full key replacement plus diagnostic time when she called them earlier that morning. She did not need a new key. She needed someone to actually look at what was failing before replacing parts that were not broken.
