2009 Lexus LX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in the Westwood area of Rancho Bernardo pulled into a dry cleaner and came back out to an LX that wouldn't cooperate. Push-to-start would flash a key warning, but only in the afternoon. Mornings it was fine. She had already taken it to another locksmith about a week and a half earlier after her original fob stopped responding, and that job had seemed to go fine at first.
By the time she called me, she had convinced herself the LX had developed some kind of electrical gremlin. She was already looking at tow quotes.
I drove out to her. Sat in the driver's seat and ran through it methodically. The fob was being read some of the time, rejected other times. That inconsistency pointed one direction: either a marginal battery, a chip pairing issue from the previous programming job, or both layered on top of each other.
I pulled the fob apart on the center console. The CR1632 was original, not swapped out during the locksmith visit. It was reading low. Beyond that, when I checked the registered key data through the diagnostic port, the previous programming had introduced a mismatch in what the vehicle security system expected to see during the deeper verification pass. The chip in that fob was not the right generation for this system. It passed the first handshake, which is why the car started at all, but the system kept kicking it out during the secondary check as the day went on and temperatures shifted.
I programmed a correct replacement fob with the right transponder chip generation, swapped the CR1632, and walked every function: door handles, lock and unlock, the hatch, and push-to-start. Everything clean.
She asked what the dealer would have said. Probably "needs a new fob, possibly a control module," and a wait for parts. What she actually needed was someone who got the generation right the first time.
