Yes. The 2010 LX has an emergency insert blade built into the smart fob, and that blade goes into the door lock cylinder when the fob battery is dead or the passive entry system isn't responding. If that blade snaps off inside the lock, which happens when it gets forced or used at an angle, I can extract the broken piece without pulling the door panel. Once it's out, I decode the lock and cut a new blade to match. You don't want to just pull the broken tip and call it done, because the lock profile needs to be right or you'll have trouble every time you use it.

Your 2010 LX uses a smart key, which is a fob that communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system even before you touch anything. The car is reading the fob continuously when you're nearby, which is what allows passive entry through the door handles and starting through the push-button. Inside the fob is a programmed transponder chip that the immobilizer recognizes as authorized. There are also four buttons for manual lock, unlock, and liftgate functions.

A traditional transponder key has a chip too, but it only wakes up when inserted into the ignition. The smart key is always in low-level communication with the vehicle. That also means when it fails, there are more things that can go wrong, and more things to diagnose.

My LX shows a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start by holding the fob flat against the start button and pressing. Even with a completely dead fob battery, the start button area has a built-in antenna that can power the transponder chip directly through close-range induction. If the car starts that way, you just need a fresh battery in the fob. Use a name-brand CR1632, seat it clean, and make sure the contacts inside the fob aren't bent or corroded.

If holding the fob to the button does nothing, the problem is either the fob itself or something on the vehicle side, like the smart key antenna or the receiving module. Some owners on LX forums have also found that the smart key function can be toggled off in the vehicle settings menu, so it's worth checking that before assuming the fob or hardware is bad. If none of that resolves it, that's when you need someone with diagnostic equipment to read what the immobilizer system is actually seeing.

Can I buy a fob online and have it programmed, or does it have to come from the dealer?

You can buy an aftermarket fob, but there's a catch: it has to be the correct compatible fob for this vehicle, and it still needs to be programmed by someone with professional diagnostic equipment. There is no self-programming sequence on the 2010 LX smart key system. No button combination, no ignition cycling trick. The registration happens through the OBD port with tools that can communicate directly with the immobilizer.

The factory FCC ID on the original fob is a useful reference when sourcing a replacement, but buying the fob yourself doesn't save as much as people expect once you factor in programming. Some people also end up with fobs that look right but aren't compatible with this generation, and then they're stuck. Touch unlock on the door handles uses a separate capacitive sensor in each handle, and those sensors can fail independently. Water intrusion and general wear on the handle assembly are the usual culprits on a vehicle this age. Check whether it's one door or both. If it's isolated to one door handle and everything else works normally, you're looking at a handle sensor or wiring issue on that door, not a key problem. That's a different repair entirely.
