Second, look at where you're holding the fob when you start the car. The antennas in the LX cabin have specific coverage zones, and if you're sitting in an unusual position or the fob is deep in a bag, the system can struggle to read it reliably.

Third, if neither of those explains it, the issue can be a weakening battery that still reads acceptable voltage on a meter but doesn't have enough current output under load to communicate properly. A fresh CR1632 is a cheap first test before anything else.

If the warning persists after all of that, the fob itself may need to be looked at, or in rarer cases there's an antenna or module issue on the vehicle side. That's when I'd come out and run a proper diagnostic.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2018 LX. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2018 LX Smart Key system does not have any onboard self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination, nothing you can do in the driveway. Registering a new fob requires professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. The fob you bought online will not do anything until it's programmed by someone with the right tools. Bring the fob with you when you call. As long as it's the correct fob for the vehicle, I can register it on site.
