2017 Lexus LX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Lexus LX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a family in the Garden Road Area of Poway. Their 2017 Lexus LX had been sitting in the driveway for two days because both fobs had stopped being recognized.

One fob had taken a swim in a water bottle accident. The other was the spare they never touched, and it had been sitting in a drawer long enough that the CR1632 had just quietly given out.

So we had a true all-keys-lost situation, but not the kind where someone panics. This family was calm about it. They had already called the dealer and been told the vehicle needed to come in, that a fob had to be ordered, and that the earliest appointment was the following week. They found me the same afternoon.

I parked behind the LX on their street and started with the spare fob before anything else. Fresh CR1632, contacts cleaned, and the spare woke right up. That alone saved us from going the full all-keys-lost route. With one working fob in hand, I connected through the diagnostic port to register a replacement for the water-damaged unit, cutting the emergency insert blade to match the vehicle while the registration process ran its timed sequence. The system on these requires a countdown period before it accepts the new fob, so I used that time to prep and test the blade fit.

The moment that actually stuck with me was when the husband walked out halfway through and saw me standing twenty feet from the car pressing buttons in every direction. He asked if something was wrong. I told him no, I just test range from multiple angles because a fob that works at three feet and dies at fifteen is a fob that will strand you in a parking lot in six months. He nodded and went back inside. When I knocked to hand over the keys, he came out and tried the range test himself.

Dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait on parts, and a bill that would have made the week worse. This was handled in the driveway, same afternoon, for a fraction of what they were quoted.
