A collision center in West Santee called me about a 2004 Lexus LX that had already been through one locksmith visit after body repairs. The shop needed a working key for the owner, another locksmith had come out, something went wrong during programming, and they left. The system was now rejecting every key registration attempt.
When I got there, the LX was sitting in the back bay, keys gone, and the shop foreman looked like he had already explained this situation too many times. He said the other locksmith saw an error, said the job needed dealer equipment, and walked.
That error is not a dead end. A failed programming attempt on these older Lexus systems can leave the immobilizer module in a fault state where it will not accept new key data until that state is cleared. The fix is not at the dealer. It is at the module level.
I pulled the relevant control module, read the EEPROM data directly with my bench tool, cleared the fault condition that the previous attempt had written in, and rebuilt the key registration table from scratch. Once the module was back in the vehicle with a clean slate, the new remote head key programmed on the first attempt. Chip recognized, remote buttons paired, ignition cycled clean.
The foreman watched the whole thing without saying much. When it started he just nodded and went to go call the owner.
The dealer route would have been a flatbed, a multi-day wait, and a bill considerably larger than mine. I was done in about 90 minutes, on site, in their lot.
