I got a call from a guy parked in a lot off Main in Downtown Fallbrook. He had the original key, it turned fine, engine cranked, and then it just died. Every time. He thought it was a fuel pump because he had just replaced the battery the week before and everything else seemed normal.
I asked him one question before I drove over: does the security light flash after it stalls. He went back, tried it, called me back and said yes.
That told me everything. The 1999 Navigator uses an early transponder system, and what he was describing was a textbook immobilizer rejection. Engine cranks because the ignition is mechanical. It stalls because the immobilizer cuts fuel when it does not recognize the chip.
When I got there I checked the antenna ring at the ignition cylinder first. It had shifted, probably during some prior dash work, and the connection was barely hanging on. The key itself was fine. The chip was reading as programmed. The ring just was not picking it up reliably.
Reseated the ring, confirmed the connection, tested four consecutive cold starts. Every one fired and held.
He had already gotten a quote from a shop that wanted to start with a full fuel system inspection. That would have been a long, expensive road to the wrong answer.
