A homeowner in the Seven Oaks neighborhood of Rancho Bernardo called me on a Saturday afternoon. His 2000 Navigator was sitting in the driveway and he had one key left, cracked down the plastic head, chip still technically in there but the key would not start the car anymore. The antenna ring reads the chip at a very specific distance and orientation, and his chip was rattling around a quarter inch away from where it needed to be. That was the whole problem.

I cut a new key blade to his lock, transferred the original chip into a fresh key head, and ran the onboard relearn using his existing key and the new one together. No scan tool needed for a same-key chip transfer on this generation when you still have a working enrollment path. The Navigator started on the first try.

He asked me later what the dealer would have charged. I told him to be glad he called first.
