Lincoln key programming isn't a dealer-only procedure. It hasn't been for years. The car's body control module checks the fob through proximity antennas on push-to-start models, or through a coil around the ignition on older PATS models. Programming means telling that module to accept one more fob code via a timed security sequence through the OBD port. I do it with a cable and a computer.
A classic car collector at a storage facility in Solana Beach was convinced his 2012 Lincoln Navigator needed the dealer. He collects vintage Lincolns but figured the newer ones were locked behind dealer-only software. An outdated forum post confirmed what he'd heard.
