I got a call out to Eden Gardens in Solana Beach on a 2012 Navigator that had already beaten one other locksmith. He'd left the job unfinished and told the owner the body control module was probably bad.
The backstory: the owner needed a replacement key programmed, the other locksmith started the job, and somewhere in the middle of the programming sequence the vehicle battery dropped voltage. That kind of power interruption during an immobilizer handshake can push the vehicle into a security lockout state that looks a lot like module failure if you don't know what you're looking at. The Navigator was sitting in front of a body shop, wouldn't start, and the previous guy had already told the owner to expect a tow and a big dealer bill.
I hooked up my jump pack to hold voltage before touching anything else. That step alone changes the outcome on these jobs. Programming sequences on this generation need stable power the entire time, and skipping that is exactly how the first attempt went sideways.
Once the voltage was stable, I cleared the fault codes sitting in the system before starting any new programming attempt. Clean slate. Then I ran the key programming sequence through the OBD port, and the new remote head key enrolled on the first try.
The owner had been told he was looking at a tow, a multi-day dealer wait, and a bill that made him wince. He watched the whole thing happen in the parking lot in under two hours and drove home that afternoon. The dealer comparison came up at the end, and I just told him what he already knew by that point.
