How long does it take to get a key made for a 2001 Lincoln Navigator at the dealer?

Three real reasons. First, dealer service lanes book out, and a key job on a 2001 Navigator is not a priority slot. It can also show up if someone had the key copied at a hardware store using a blank that looks right but carries no chip at all. The cut works, the ignition cylinder turns, but the security system kills the fuel and the engine drops.

If your chip key is old and has taken some abuse, the chip itself can fail without any visible damage to the blade. Bring the key and I can check whether the chip is reading before we go further.

Can I buy a key blank online and have it programmed, or does it have to come from you?

You can buy a blank online and it may work, but there is a catch. The chip inside has to be the correct type for this vehicle's immobilizer. Not every blank sold as compatible actually is, and if the chip does not match what the system expects, programming will fail and you will not know why until you are already standing there.
