2006 Lincoln Navigator Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A Fletcher Cove parking situation turned into a longer morning than anyone planned.
The owner had driven down to the beach, killed the engine, and came back to a Navigator that would not acknowledge the key at all. No lock response, no unlock response. She turned the key in the ignition and the engine fired but then died right back out. She tried again. Same thing, start and stall. The immobilizer was reading the key as unrecognized, even though this was the original key she had used for years.
I pulled up to Fletcher Cove and started at the key itself. The remote head key housing had a hairline crack near the base where the blade meets the fob body. Water, probably from wet hands or a beach bag, had gotten into the head. The circuit board inside had some corrosion on the contacts. That was killing both the remote signal and the transponder read.
I dried the board, cleaned the contacts, and tested the transponder signal. It was too far gone. We needed a new remote head key cut and programmed to the vehicle, not just a battery swap.
I cut a replacement blade to match the vehicle's lock and ignition, then connected to the OBD port and walked through the security programming sequence. The immobilizer enrolled the new key, the remote functions came back on all three buttons, and the engine started and stayed running.
She had figured on a tow to the dealer and a day without the truck. Instead she was back in the Navigator in under an hour, and what she paid me was a fraction of what the dealer quoted when she called them first out of habit.
