1995 Subaru Impreza
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1995 Impreza to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. The dealer is not your only option, and for a vehicle this age it is rarely your best one. A mobile locksmith can come to wherever the car is sitting in North El Cajon, decode the lock, cut a key, and have you driving again in the same visit. Towing adds cost and time that simply is not necessary for a mechanical key car.

Q: How long does a replacement key take for a 1995 Impreza?

Usually thirty to forty minutes on site, depending on the situation. If you have a working key to duplicate, it is faster. If all keys are gone and the lock needs to be decoded first, it takes a little longer, but it is still a single visit. No waiting on parts, no shipping anything off, no coming back a second day.

Q: A key broke off inside my 1995 Impreza ignition. What happens now?

Broken key extraction is a common call on cars this age. The metal fatigues over time, especially if the key had a small nick or bend that nobody noticed. A locksmith uses extraction tools to remove the broken piece without pulling the cylinder or damaging anything. Once the fragment is out, if you still have the other half of the key, the cut can be read from it. If not, the cylinder gets decoded and a fresh key is cut.

Q: My 1995 Impreza key turns but feels rough and stiff. Should I replace the key or the lock?

Start with the key. On a thirty-year-old car, the key blank wears down and the cuts round off slightly, which makes the tumblers work harder. A freshly cut replacement key on the original code often solves it immediately. If a new key still feels rough, the cylinder itself may have worn tumblers or debris inside. A locksmith can clean and assess it on site before recommending a cylinder replacement. Most of the time a new cut is all it takes.

1995 Subaru Impreza Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in North El Cajon, parked near one of the shops off Bradley Avenue. He had a 1995 Subaru Impreza and zero keys. Not lost-one, lost-all. Said he bought the car off a private seller who handed him a single spare that snapped in the ignition about a week later. Half the key was stuck inside. The other half was in his hand.

He'd already called around. One shop told him the car needed to be towed. Another quoted him a price that made him laugh out loud and hang up.

I drove out in my van. Extracted the broken blade from the ignition cylinder without damaging anything, which is the part that makes people nervous when they watch. Then I decoded the lock, cut a fresh key to match, and tested it in the ignition and both doors.

Total time on site was under forty minutes. He drove it home that afternoon. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that had nothing to do with the actual work involved. A 1995 Impreza with a mechanical key is one of the cleaner jobs out there when the right person shows up with the right tools.

Subaru Impreza Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1995 Subaru Impreza. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1995 Impreza is a cutting job, not a programming job. There is no chip to register, no security module to reset. A locksmith either decodes one of your door or ignition locks to determine the correct key cut, or opens the car and traces the code from there. Once the cut is known, a new key gets made on site. You do not need to tow the car anywhere.
