Down near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, a guy called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had a 2018 Subaru Impreza, push-button start, and zero working keys. Not one. His only fob had gone through the wash, and when it dried out, it just sat there doing nothing. The car sat in a surface lot two blocks from the beach, completely unresponsive to anything he tried.

The immobilizer has to be accessed, old key data cleared, and the new fob enrolled from scratch through the OBD port. I backed up the immobilizer data before touching anything, which is just standard practice on a job like this, then ran the all-keys-lost procedure. New fob came up, registered clean, push-button start worked.
He stood there pressing the start button a few times like he was making sure it would keep doing it. It did.
The dealer wait alone would have cost him days. What he paid me was a fraction of what they wanted, and he drove home that afternoon.
