2020 Subaru Impreza Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in La Mesa Village on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked behind a coffee shop on La Mesa Boulevard, laptop bag over his shoulder, heading back to his 2020 Subaru Impreza after a meeting. The fob had been acting up for a week, he said. Short range, had to hold it close to the door handle. He swapped the CR2032 that morning. Then it stopped responding entirely.
He was standing next to the car when I pulled up. The emergency insert key got him in, which was good. But the push-button start wasn't seeing the fob at all. No warning, just nothing happening when he pressed it with the fob in his hand.
I popped the fob open on the hood. The new CR2032 was in there, but it had been seated against a slightly corroded contact. Whoever put it in had pressed it down without cleaning the tray first. I cleaned the contacts, reseated the battery correctly, and handed it back.
Still nothing. That told me what I needed to know. The fob itself had an intermittent internal fault, the kind that hides until it doesn't. A battery swap can mask the symptoms for a while and then stop masking them.
I had a matching replacement fob in the van. Pulled up the OBD port under the dash, ran the pairing sequence through the diagnostic tool, and registered the new fob to the immobilizer. Verified all four buttons, verified push-button start from the driver seat and from outside the vehicle. About 30 minutes start to finish, in the parking lot, while he stood there checking his phone.
He mentioned he'd called the dealer before calling me. They told him to bring it in, said they'd need to assess it first, and couldn't give him a timeline. He didn't need a tow, didn't need to leave the car, and didn't spend anywhere near what they would have charged.
