Over in Bayside, Imperial Beach, a woman who worked early shifts at a coffee spot called me on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2015 Impreza she bought used two years before, came with one key, and that one key had been getting flaky for months. She kept meaning to get a spare made. Then the blade pivot on her fob cracked, she forced it once too many times on a stiff lock, and the blade snapped off inside the door lock. The transponder chip inside the cracked fob housing was still intact. Because of that, I didn't need to run a full all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more. I extracted the stuck blade from the lock, decoded the cut from it, and used my programmer to pull the transponder data from the old chip. From there I cut two new key blades, transferred the chip data into a fresh housing, and had both keys verified and tested before she finished her second cup.
Forty minutes, start to finish, standing in her shared driveway. She had two keys where she had zero. The dealer quote she'd looked up the night before was the thing that pushed her to call a mobile guy instead of waiting for an appointment.
She said the whole thing felt anticlimactic. That is usually the goal.
