I got a call from a guy parked outside a vacation rental property off in the Granite Hills area of El Cajon. He was renting the place for the weekend, came out to his 2019 Impreza, and the fob just stopped talking to the car. Push the button, nothing. Walk up to the door handle, nothing. The dash was giving him a key-not-detected warning and the push-to-start wasn't responding at all.
He had already tried the obvious: held the fob up to the start button and pushed. The car caught that and started, which told me the fob's internal transponder element was alive. Swapped it, reseated everything, and the range came right back. Did a full button walk, tested the door handles, confirmed the start button was reading the fob from a normal distance, and that was it.
He mentioned the rental host had already looked up the dealer. Appointment the next morning, tow if it wouldn't start, and a quote that made him wince. He didn't need any of that. He needed a cell swap and someone who showed up the same day.
The whole call, drive, and job took less time than he would have spent waiting for a tow truck.
