A night janitor called from a laundromat parking lot near the Spring Valley border in Lemon Grove at about 10:30 at night. His only key to his 2012 Impreza was gone. He had no idea where it went, did not have his registration on him, and had already started mentally pricing out a tow.

He stood there watching and got visibly calmer once the locks started responding.
He drove home that night. The dealer was closed, and they would have wanted him to tow the car in and wait days anyway, all for a lot more than he paid me. The VIN he found through the windshield is what made it possible. That is always the first thing I ask for.
