I got a call out to a scenic pull-off near Casa de Oro in La Mesa on a Sunday afternoon.

A guy had been on a road trip, stepped out to take in the view, and came back to a problem he hadn't seen coming: the blade on his 2014 Subaru Impreza key had snapped. Half of it was in his hand. The other half was sitting in the ignition cylinder.

He'd already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out. New cylinder, new key programming, the whole thing. The quote was pushing toward $500 and involved towing the car somewhere to get the work done.

I extracted the broken fragment using a pick set without touching the wafer surfaces. Once it was out clean, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. Cut a new blade from the decode on site. Then programmed the transponder through the OBD port to marry the new key to the car's immobilizer.

The cylinder was fine. The car looked exactly the same when I left as it did when I got there. No drilling, nothing replaced that didn't need replacing.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the other locksmith had quoted, and he didn't have to tow it anywhere. Destructive entry is always a last resort. Most of the time there's no reason to go there.
