1998 Subaru Legacy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Lemon Grove, mid-afternoon. A guy rolls up to me in a parking lot off Broadway because he couldn't get his ignition to turn clean anymore. 1998 Subaru Legacy, looked like it had lived a full life. He'd been fighting the key for weeks, doing the jiggle-and-push routine every single time he parked.

He'd already called the dealer. They quoted him a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and reprogramming, and the number they gave him was not small. A friend told him to try a mobile locksmith before committing to that.

I pulled the ignition apart on site and the cylinder itself was fine. What was worn were the internal wafers, the small metal pieces that read the key cuts. Over time they wear down, the key starts catching, and it feels like the whole thing is dying. It's not. The cylinder just needs the worn wafers swapped out.

I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key to match. His separate fob, the factory remote he'd been using all along, paired right back up to the new key once the ignition was turning smooth again. I laid the old wafers out on the hood so he could see exactly what had worn.

He didn't buy a single part he didn't actually need. The ignition turns clean, the key slides in without drama, and the fob works the way it should. The dealer quote never came up again after that.
