Bressi Ranch is mostly newer construction, planned streets, wide sidewalks. But the call came from a street just outside that grid, one of those narrow residential hillside roads that Carlsbad has tucked behind the newer developments. A graphic novelist up there had a 2000 Legacy sitting on a steep one-lane stretch with no room to turn around and no way to push it down to a flat spot.
The tow company said no. Too narrow, too steep, not worth the liability. The dealer told him he'd have to get the car to them first, which required a working key, which was exactly the problem.
I parked at the bottom, grabbed what I needed, and walked up.
The fob matched the factory FCC ID on the label -- 4-button unit with a CR2025 inside that had clearly been there since before he owned the car. Corroded contacts, barely any voltage left. That explained the remote functions being dead. The key blade was worn but still cut to the vehicle, so the ignition wasn't the issue -- the remote was simply gone.
I replaced the battery, cleaned the contacts, tested all four buttons, then verified the lock and unlock were actually cycling the doors. On a hill that steep, with no flat surface to work from, I had the fob propped on the door frame while I tested. Not glamorous, but it worked.
The car started on the first turn. He hadn't needed a new key at all. Just a fresh CR2025 and someone willing to walk up the hill.
The dealer comparison barely came up. He just wanted to get back to work.
