I was parked near the Richland neighborhood of San Marcos finishing up a different job when the call came in. A guy at a nearby lot, Legacy owner, said his key would not start the car. He had already swapped the battery himself the week before, so he was convinced something was seriously wrong with the key or the car.
When I pulled up, he handed me the remote head key and I could see right away the battery he put in was seated at a slight angle. The contacts were barely touching. It looked fine to him because the lock and unlock buttons still worked from a few feet away, but the transponder side of that key needs a cleaner signal than the radio side does. The immobilizer was not seeing it consistently, which explained why the car would occasionally start and then stall.
I reseated the battery properly, cleaned the contacts inside the housing, and confirmed programming was still intact with my reader. No reprogram needed. The key had never actually lost its pairing. It was just starving for a reliable connection.
He had already been quoted a replacement key and a full programming job by a shop down the street. He was relieved it did not come to that. We were done in about fifteen minutes from the time I arrived, and he drove off without spending anywhere near what the other shop wanted.
