2002 Subaru Legacy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does a 2002 Subaru Legacy use?

It uses a remote: a key with a cut blade for the ignition and locks, plus a built-in fob with buttons for remote lock, unlock, and panic. There's also a transponder chip inside that communicates with the immobilizer when you turn the key. The immobilizer checks that chip every start. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine either won't start or will start and immediately cut out.

Q: Why does key replacement at a Subaru dealer take so long?

A few layers. First, on a vehicle this age, the remote often isn't sitting on a shelf. Dealers typically order it by VIN, and depending on regional stock, that can take days. Second, they won't program until the part is physically in the building, so the order wait and the appointment wait stack on top of each other.

Q: My 2002 Legacy starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. First thing: swap the battery. The 2002 Legacy remote runs on a CR2025, and a dead or weak cell is the most common reason the buttons go silent while the key still starts the car. Those are two separate circuits. The transponder that talks to the immobilizer is passive and doesn't need the battery at all. The buttons do.

Q: Can I program a replacement remote for my 2002 Legacy myself?

There is an onboard procedure for the 2002 Legacy that works when you already have a working programmed key present. It involves a specific sequence using the ignition and the door lock switch. Some owners have pulled it off using forum walkthroughs. The catch: if you're starting from zero with no working key, that onboard sequence won't help you. All-keys-lost requires external programming equipment to re-enroll the transponder and pair the remote.

2002 Subaru Legacy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman who runs a produce stand at a farmers market lot in Vista, over in the Shadowridge area. She'd had her 2002 Legacy for years and finally lost her only remote.

A friend told her to go to the dealer. The dealer's site made it sound like a multi-day process. An old forum post she found said Subaru remotes could only be done by the dealer with special software. She wasn't sure what to believe.

I told her I could come to her.

She was still at the market when I arrived that evening. The Legacy was parked in the lot, dusty from a long day. She handed me the old cut key she'd been using just to get in and out, no remote, no way to lock the car remotely.

The job on a 2002 Legacy is pretty contained. The immobilizer on this generation communicates with a transponder in the key through a coil around the ignition barrel. The remote adds the wireless piece. I cut a new blade to match her locks, programmed the transponder to the immobilizer, and enrolled the remote so the lock, unlock, and panic buttons all responded. Tested every button. Walked the doors. Done before the last vendor started packing up.

She didn't need a dealer appointment. She didn't need to wait a week for a fob to be ordered by VIN. The car was sitting twenty feet away the whole time, and it went home with a fully working key that evening.

Subaru Legacy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a Subaru dealer typically take for a key replacement on a 2002 Legacy?▼

It depends on whether they have the remote in stock. Best case, if they have the right fob on the shelf and someone available to program it, you might be in and out in under an hour. More commonly, the fob has to be ordered by VIN and a separate programming appointment gets scheduled, which can push the job out several days. The 2002 Legacy is old enough that dealers don't always keep remotes for it on hand.
