2022 Subaru Legacy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement smart key last?

The programming itself doesn't expire. Once a fob is enrolled in the vehicle, it stays enrolled unless it gets erased, usually by an all-keys-lost reset or a dealer reflash. The physical fob is a different story. The shell and buttons take daily abuse, and cheaper housings crack or wear through faster than the electronics inside them. The CR2032 typically lasts a year or two depending on how often you use the fob.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. The work is covered under our warranty. That said, if a correctly programmed fob starts misbehaving, the fob is rarely the actual cause. A pattern that comes up on the 2022 and 2023 Legacy and its platform siblings is an intermittent key-not-detected warning where the car powers on but won't crank, then clears on its own after sitting for a few minutes. Owners report this happening sporadically, not every start.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2022 Legacy. Is an all-keys-lost replacement still possible without going to the dealer?

Yes, and it's a common call. All-keys-lost on the 2022 Legacy smart key system means every previously enrolled fob gets wiped from the vehicle's memory and new fobs are registered fresh. It takes longer than an add-a-key job because of the security enrollment sequence built into the process, but it's fully doable on site. You'll need to show proof of ownership and a valid ID, which I check before starting any all-keys-lost job. Bring your registration or title.

Q: Can I program a second fob myself if I already have one working key?

No. The 2022 Legacy smart key system doesn't have a self-programming mode. Adding a fob requires diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. There's no ignition-cycle sequence or button combination that does it on this setup. If you bought a second fob online, it still needs to be enrolled by someone with the right tools. That's where we come in.

2022 Subaru Legacy Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was between classes in Rancho Bernardo, over in 4S Ranch, standing in a strip mall parking lot when she texted me. She had her VIN ready, which I appreciated. Some people don't think to grab that until I'm already parked behind them.

She had one working fob and wanted a spare. Smart move. The 2022 Legacy smart key system requires diagnostic equipment to enroll a new fob, so there's no ignition-turn trick or button sequence she could've done herself. That's not a knock on her. It just isn't possible on this setup.

I had the correct blank in the van. She sent the VIN ahead of time, so I already knew the configuration before I arrived. I cut the emergency insert blade to her vehicle and ran the enrollment through the diagnostic port. Both fobs tested out, every button, door handles, the works. She watched the whole thing from the curb.

From the time I parked to the time she walked back inside, it was under twenty minutes. She mentioned she'd called the dealer first and the wait for an appointment alone was going to cost her most of a week. She paid a fraction of what they quoted and kept her lunch break intact.

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2022 Legacy?▼

We use verified blanks that match the factory FCC ID and are built to the correct spec for this vehicle. On a 2022 Legacy smart key, the fob has to pair correctly with the immobilizer through the diagnostic port. If the blank isn't the right spec, enrollment can fail or produce an intermittent connection that looks like a programming problem but is actually a hardware mismatch.
