A smart key is different. That type stays in your pocket and the car detects it passively, with a push-button start. The 2014 Legacy does not use that system.

The four buttons on your remote head key handle lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. Those run off the CR2032 inside the fob. The starting function is handled by the chip and is completely separate from the battery. So if the battery dies, you lose your remote functions, but the ignition still works fine.

Swap the CR2032, make sure it is seated flat with good contact on both clips, and test all four buttons. If one button works but another does not after a fresh battery, that points to a worn button contact inside the fob housing. If the whole fob is still dead on a known-good battery, then it is worth looking at whether the fob took some damage or whether there is a receiver issue on the car side. But nine times out of ten on these, it is just the battery.
