She called me from the Costco parking lot off Main in Ramona on a July afternoon. Her 2017 Legacy was locked tight and the fob had gone completely dark. Frozen groceries, a Costco run's worth, sitting in the cargo area while the sun worked on them.

But the car still wouldn't start. That told me the transponder registration had dropped, most likely from a 12-volt battery event she mentioned had happened a few weeks back. I plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the key registration, and re-enrolled the fob through the immobilizer. Five minutes of tool time.
Tested every button, confirmed start, walked the door handles.
From her call to engine running was 42 minutes. The groceries made it. She was back on the road before anything thawed. The dealer option would have meant a tow, an overnight, and a bill she hadn't budgeted for.
