I got a text from someone out near Alpine Village on a Saturday afternoon. A mountain biker had parked his 2001 Legacy at a fire road pullout, done his ride, and come back to no key. Gone somewhere on the trail. No dealer close, no way to move the car, and a long drive home that wasn't happening on foot.

The pullout was gravel, no shade, and he was sitting on a rock next to his bike looking at his car like it owed him an apology. I introduced myself, pulled the equipment, and got to work. On a 2001 Legacy, the remote and the ignition key are separate pieces. The fob handles lock, unlock, and trunk. The key handles starting. I cut a replacement key blade to his lock on site using my decoder, then programmed a fresh fob to the car's receiver. Four buttons, the factory fob battery, done in the dirt.
His car started. He loaded the bike. The whole thing happened without a tow, without a dealer appointment, without waiting until Monday.
