A guy in the Garden Road Area had a rough morning. He was out in the driveway before sunrise, running late, and his 2018 Legacy just would not acknowledge the fob. Push the start button, nothing. The dash threw a key warning at him. He had already done the battery swap, a brand new CR2032, and it did not help.
He called me thinking he needed a whole new smart key programmed from scratch.
I got to him before his second cup of coffee went cold. First thing I did was pop his fob open right there on the hood. The CR2032 was fresh but the positive contact had a slight bow to it, not making full contact with the battery face. Tiny thing. I seated the battery correctly and cleaned the contact points.
Tested it. Still marginal. So I pulled my diagnostic equipment and checked whether the vehicle was seeing the fob at all. It was reading it, but the fob registration had a ghost in it. One of those situations where a low-voltage event had partially corrupted the pairing. Needed a re-enrollment to clean it up, not a new fob.
Re-registered the existing fob, walked every button, checked the emergency blade seats properly inside the fob, confirmed the start function worked clean three times in a row before I handed it back.
He had been mentally budgeting for a dealer visit, multi-day wait, and a bill that would have made him wince. He was back inside finishing breakfast before the neighbors left for work.
