2003 Subaru Legacy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to me in Spring Valley?

Dictionary Hill and the surrounding parts of Spring Valley are regular stops for me. Typical arrival is within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where exactly you are and traffic at that moment. When you call, I confirm your vehicle details for the 2003 Legacy, make sure I have the right fob and battery on the van, and head straight to you.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. I stock fob blanks and carry the programming equipment on every call. There is no part to order, no appointment to schedule for a separate day, and no waiting on anything to ship. Subaru owners in online groups frequently mention that local dealers require the fob to be ordered by VIN and won't program until it arrives, sometimes days later. With me, same day is the standard, not the exception.

Q: My new fob has a fresh battery but the car still won't respond to it. What's going on?

This is a rolling code sync issue, and it's one of the more common complaints I see from owners of this generation Subaru. The fob and the receiver module keep a synchronized count. If the fob got triggered too many times out of range, or the car's battery went dead and came back, the count on each side can drift far enough apart that the receiver stops accepting the signal even though the fob is technically working fine.

Q: My 2003 Legacy starts fine but the remote won't lock or unlock the doors. Do I need a whole new system?

Probably not. On this generation Subaru, the keyless entry receiver and the immobilizer are separate from each other. The car starting cleanly means the immobilizer side is fine. The door lock issue is isolated to the remote entry side. First thing to check is whether a fuse has blown. The keyless entry system on early-2000s Subarus runs through the accessory fuse circuit, and a blown fuse can knock out the remote locks while leaving the ignition and immobilizer completely unaffected.

2003 Subaru Legacy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

He landed after a long backpacking trip overseas, walked straight to his spot on level four of the garage, and the fob did nothing. No click, no flash of the parking lights. Just a 2003 Subaru Legacy sitting there ignoring him.

The blade was in his backpack. His backpack was in the trunk. The trunk release is on the fob.

He tried the fob maybe thirty more times. Still nothing. He called the dealer and got Thursday. It was Tuesday morning. He found EZ Car Keyz before he even got to the tow company.

I was at the garage inside 45 minutes. Getting the door open was the first step, then I pulled his backpack out of the trunk so he could stop worrying about that. The battery in the fob was dead, which explained everything. Swapped in a fresh CR2025, ran a resync, and tested all four buttons at the car.

Then I confirmed the immobilizer side was still happy by watching a clean start. No warning lights, no stall, nothing to chase.

He drove out of that garage the same morning. The dealer would have meant two more days of waiting, a tow bill, and airport parking adding up the whole time.

One CR2025 and a resync. That was it.

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2003 Subaru Legacy key replacement take?▼

If you have a working key and just need a spare fob programmed, the programming side typically runs 10 to 20 minutes once I'm connected. Add-a-key on this generation of Subaru is not a long job when the car already has a functioning key in its memory. All-keys-lost is a different situation. The immobilizer needs to be reset before new keys can be enrolled, and that process has a timed wait built in.
