A battery swap alone won't fix a sync problem. The fob needs to be resynced or reprogrammed to the car. On some of these, an onboard procedure through the ignition can recover it. If that doesn't take, a scan tool on the OBD port will handle it. Either way, it's a fixable problem and not a sign that the whole fob or receiver is bad.

First thing to check is whether a fuse has blown. The keyless entry system on early-2000s Subarus runs through the accessory fuse circuit, and a blown fuse can knock out the remote locks while leaving the ignition and immobilizer completely unaffected. Check the fuse box before assuming the receiver module or the fob itself has failed. If the fuses are good, a resync or reprogram is the next step.
