There's a fire road pullout on the eastern edge of San Diego County, somewhere past where the suburbs give way to dry chaparral and loose gravel, that I would not have found without a dropped pin.
A mountain biker had finished his ride and come back to his 2008 Legacy with one problem: no key. Gone somewhere on the trail, and the trail wasn't giving it back. No tow would make the trip out there easily, the nearest dealer was a long drive from a car that wasn't moving, and he'd hiked to a ridge just to get enough signal to text me. His message was basically: "Legacy, no key, here's my pin."
I loaded what I needed for this specific job and drove out. When I pulled up, he was sitting on a boulder next to his car with his helmet still on, eating a granola bar like he'd accepted his afternoon was gone.
It hadn't. I decoded the lock on site, cut a replacement key blade, built up the remote head key, and programmed the transponder and remote through the OBD port. Tested the start, tested all four buttons, walked the doors. The whole thing happened in that dirt lot with his car parked exactly where he'd left it after the ride.
He asked me what the dealer would have quoted. Honestly, between the tow from that location and whatever the dealer would charge for the key and programming time, it would have been a rough number. He paid a fraction of that, right there in the gravel, and rode home.
