One thing worth knowing on the 1998 Avalon specifically: a lockout and a key replacement are two different jobs. On a 1998 Avalon, the VIN also helps confirm the exact key specifications for the vehicle as built, which matters when cutting and programming a replacement. The whole verification process takes a few minutes on site. I am not going to ask you to track down extra paperwork or wait for a callback from anyone.

My 1998 Avalon cranks fine but dies immediately after starting. Could this be a key or transponder problem?

That is one of the classic signs of a transponder read failure on this generation of Toyota's immobilizer system. The engine cranks because the mechanical key is turning the ignition. It starts and then immediately stalls because the immobilizer did not get a valid signal from the chip in the key head, so it cuts fuel.

A few things cause this. The chip itself can crack with age, especially on a key that has been on a heavy keyring for 25-plus years. The antenna ring around the ignition cylinder can also degrade or shift out of position. And a key that was copied at a hardware store without duplicating the transponder will do this every time because the blade works but there is no chip in it.

Before assuming the worst, try starting with the key held steady and close to the cylinder, not wiggling. If it still dies, the chip or the antenna is where I start looking.

Can I get a spare key cut at a hardware store or one of those kiosk machines?

For the blade, maybe. For the full key, no. A hardware store or kiosk can duplicate the metal blade so it turns the lock and the ignition, but they cannot program the transponder chip. You end up with a key that opens the door and turns the ignition, but the car cranks and dies. On a 1998 Avalon, you need both the correctly cut blade and a properly enrolled transponder to actually drive the vehicle. The chip enrollment is what I handle on site.
