He had been out of town for a week. The Avalon sat in the economy lot at the airport the whole time, exactly where he left it.
He came off the shuttle with two bags, walked up to the car, and nothing happened. No click, no lights, no response from the door handle. He tried the fob a few more times standing closer, then further away, the way everyone does when they already know it is not working. Dead battery in the fob. That was his best guess. His worst guess was that it was something else.

Both fobs came back registered and talking cleanly. No programming work needed beyond the fault clear.
He drove home that afternoon. I left him with a spare CR1632 in the glovebox and a working key in each hand. The car never moved from the space he had parked it in seven days earlier.
He mentioned the dealer quote on the way out. I told him to hang onto that number in case he ever needs a comparison.
