I got a call from a resident in Eden Gardens, Solana Beach who was stuck inside his own gated community. Not on the road, not at a trailhead. His 2006 Avalon was sitting in the guest parking area inside the complex, and his smart fob had stopped being recognized. The car would not start. The CR1632 inside was reading low.
I cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh battery correctly, and ran through every button function. Then I did the full check you always do on these: door handle touch response, lock confirmation, the start cycle. Once it was behaving, I did not just hand it back and walk off. I cycled through everything again while he watched.
He had been about to authorize a tow to a dealer across town, which would have meant gate logistics, a flatbed, and waiting days for an appointment slot. Instead his car was running again before the tow company would have even confirmed availability.
The fix was simple. The location made it feel complicated. That is usually how it goes.
