A guy out in De Luz, Fallbrook had just bought a used 1999 Toyota Avalon off a private sale. Decent car, solid shape, one key. The seller handed it over and said something like "get yourself a spare." Simple enough advice. He figured the hardware store could handle it.
Hardware stores can cut the blade. They cannot program the transponder chip. He found that out after the cut key turned in the ignition and the engine cranked, then died. That is exactly what happens when the immobilizer does not recognize the chip. The car was not broken. The key was just a shaped piece of metal without the handshake.
He called the dealer. The number they gave him for a replacement key was not something he was expecting on a car he had just bought used for a reasonable price. He called me next and asked if dealers were always that expensive. I told him yes, pretty much.
I met him at his place in De Luz. He had the one original working key with him, which made the job clean. I read the transponder data off the original, wrote it to a fresh blank, and cut the blade to match on my machine. Tested both keys. Both started the car. Total time on site was under forty-five minutes.
He left with two working keys and spent a fraction of what the dealer quoted him for one. He also mentioned the original key had a worn chip cavity and the rubber was cracking. If that one had failed before he got a spare made, he would have been looking at an all-keys-lost job, which is a longer and more involved process. Getting the spare done while the original is still in hand is always the right call.
