Solana Beach has that stretch on South Cedros where the design studios and boutique shops stack up tight, and parking in that neighborhood means you are usually wedged into a small lot behind the building. That is exactly where I got called one afternoon.
The owner had been in and out of her car all morning running errands along the Cedros Design District. Somewhere between stops, the fob started acting strange. Touch unlock on the driver door stopped responding. The push-button start still worked if she had the fob on her, but getting into the car meant fishing out the emergency insert blade and using the door lock cylinder like it was fifteen years ago. She figured the fob was dying and called me before calling the dealer.
I met her in the back lot. First thing I did was open the fob and check the battery. CR1632 inside, which was correct, but it was sitting slightly off-center and one of the contact clips had a small outward bend -- looked like someone had pried the case open at some point rather than using the slot. Reseated the battery properly, bent the clip back into contact, and closed it up.
Then I walked every function before saying anything. Driver door touch unlock. Passenger door. Push-button start. Lock button. The fob lit everything up clean.
She did not need a new smart key. She needed the one she had to make proper contact with its own battery. I showed her what the bent clip looked like and why it matters, and she left with a working fob and a spare CR1632 to keep in her glove box.
The dealer visit she was bracing for -- appointment days out, tow or a long drive, waiting room time, and a bill for a new fob plus programming -- never happened. Sometimes the fix is smaller than the problem feels.
