I got a call from a guy in the Viejas Area parking lot of the Home Depot in Alpine. He had a 2015 Avalon and one working fob. He wanted a spare before he ended up with zero working keys, which, with these cars, is a genuinely bad day.
He had already looked it up. Found a forum thread, a few years old, that said Toyota smart keys were dealer-only and he should expect a long wait and a painful bill. The dealer's service line had confirmed the appointment was days out.
I told him I could meet him on lunch.
When I got there he was leaning against the car eating a sandwich. The Avalon was sitting right there in the lot, no drama. I pulled up behind him, set up at the OBD port under the dash, and walked him through what I was doing. The smart key system on this generation stores registered fob data in the vehicle's security module, and adding a new fob means going in through the diagnostic port with the right software to write a new entry without wiping the existing one. That part matters. You don't want to lose the one working key in the process of adding a second.
New fob cut and paired. I tested every button, checked the touch-unlock on both front handles, and had him run the start button himself so he saw it work with his own hands.
He mentioned what the dealer quoted. I told him what he owed me. He laughed a little.
The whole thing happened in a parking lot during a lunch break. The car never moved.
