2004 Toyota Avalon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2004 Toyota Avalon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in San Ysidro Village, a woman had been fighting her 2004 Avalon ignition for a few weeks. Not a dead key, not a lost key.

The key went in, but some mornings it turned fine and other mornings she was sitting in the parking lot near the yoga studio doing the slow-wiggle-and-pray routine. Some days five minutes. The dealer looked at it and quoted her a full ignition cylinder replacement plus new keys plus programming. She called me instead.

I pulled the cylinder and found worn wafers. Not a dead lock, just a lock that had been turned ten thousand times and was finally showing it. The key was worn too, which made the whole thing worse because a worn key in a worn cylinder gets sloppy in both directions.

I decoded the lock, replaced the wafers that had gone soft, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I programmed the transponder chip to the car so the immobilizer would accept it. Two steps, done on site, in her parking lot.

The ignition turned clean. Key slid in without the grab. She said it felt like a different car.

The dealer's quote covered parts she did not need. I replaced what was actually worn and left the rest alone. She paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted, without a tow, without a drop-off, and without waiting two days for a callback.
