2001 Toyota Avalon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman in Fairbanks Ranch, out in Rancho Santa Fe, who had snapped her only key off in her jacket pocket. The plastic head cracked away from the blade. The blade itself was still usable but she was worried the car wouldn't recognize it without the housing intact, and she was right to wonder. I came out that evening. The Avalon's ignition cylinder reads the transponder through the key head, so I needed a fresh key blank, a proper cut, and a programmed chip. I pulled up her VIN, cut the replacement blade to match her lock, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port right in her driveway. The whole thing took about 30 minutes.
She tested it herself, turned it over, and the Avalon started clean. No tow, no waiting until the next afternoon, and she saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted.
The dealer comparison wasn't even the point for her. She just needed to move her car that night. That's the job.
