The call came from a tire shop in the Naval Base Area in Coronado. A customer had brought his 2018 Avalon in for tires. While it was sitting in the bay, someone realized he needed a spare key made. Another locksmith came out first.
That locksmith's attempt did not go clean. The vehicle threw errors mid-programming, the communication locked up, and the car ended up in a fault state where it would not accept any key at all. The locksmith packed up and left. Now the car was not going anywhere, sitting in a tire bay with cars lined up behind it.
The tire shop called me.
A locked-out immobilizer after a failed attempt is not a standard OBD programming job anymore. The system is already distrustful. I brought my bench-level module tool, which can read and write security data directly when normal communication channels are shut down by the vehicle after a bad attempt. I pulled the relevant module, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch on a known-good fob. The system came back clean on the first attempt after the reset.
Then I did what I always do before I hand anything back: walked every function. Door handles, every button on the fob, and a confirmed start. Ninety minutes total. The tire shop got their bay back. The customer got a working key and paid a fraction of what a flatbed to the dealer and a multi-day wait would have cost him.
The first locksmith was not necessarily bad. Failed programming attempts happen. The problem is walking away and leaving the car worse than you found it. I carry the tools to fix that situation because it is not the first time I have gotten that second call.
