What if I need a key for my Land Cruiser after hours or on the weekend?

Most dealer service departments are closed by early evening and shut down on Sundays. Lose your key on a Saturday night and you are looking at a Monday appointment at the earliest, plus however long the tow logistics take to get a 1996 truck into a service bay.

A mobile locksmith does not have those constraints. Both are possible on a truck this age, and they feed each other. A worn key that is slightly off the original cut puts extra stress on the wafers inside the cylinder every time you turn it. Over time that accelerates wear inside the ignition. Conversely, a worn cylinder can make even a good key feel stiff.

First check: try the key in the door lock. If it turns smoothly there but binds in the ignition, the cylinder is the suspect. If it feels rough in both, the key cut itself may be worn down from years of use and copying. Either way, getting a fresh key cut from the lock decode, rather than copying a worn key, is the right starting point. It gives you a clean reference before deciding whether the ignition cylinder itself needs attention.
