2001 Toyota Land Cruiser
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

The call came from a tire shop near RB Town Center in Rancho Bernardo. Not from the Land Cruiser owner directly. From the tire shop.

A locksmith had already been out. The owner needed a key, the other locksmith attempted a programming sequence, hit errors mid-process, and left. Just left. The Land Cruiser was sitting in the bay, wouldn't start, and now the tire shop had a problem because they needed the bay back.

When a previous programming attempt fails partway through, the immobilizer module can land in a fault state where it stops communicating over the OBD port entirely. That's what I was walking into. The module had locked itself out. Standard OBD programming at that point is a dead end.

I pulled the module. Worked directly with the chip data off the bench. Read out the security information, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration clean from the start. The fob with the factory FCC ID on it was already on hand. First attempt after the reset, the system accepted it. No hesitation.

I walked the whole thing before I packed up. Remote lock, remote unlock, the third button, and then the actual start sequence with the key sitting in the ignition. Everything worked the way it should have the first time around.

About 90 minutes total. The owner's alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have been a lot more than what I charged. I carry the bench tools specifically because other people's incomplete attempts are a real category of job on vehicles this age.
