I was already parked on Beyer Blvd when the call came in. Couple on foot, 2005 Land Cruiser in a lot nearby, neither remote doing anything. Not low range, not intermittent. Dead silent on both fobs.
They had already done the obvious stuff. New batteries in one of them, bought from a gas station, turned out to be CR2032s in a CR2016 slot. Close enough to seat, not close enough to work right.
I had the correct batteries in the van. Swapped both remotes, tested range and all three buttons on each one. Still nothing on the lock and unlock. The car would start, which told me the transponder side of the key was reading fine. The remote frequency was the problem, and it just needed a resync.
I pulled out the programmer, ran the resync for both remotes back to back, walked the doors, confirmed the lock, unlock, and panic on each fob. Both came back clean on the first pass.
They asked about the dealer. I told them what the dealer visit would look like on a Friday night: drop the car, wait through the weekend, pick it up Monday after paying for the full replacement they would push regardless of what the actual problem was. That was the afterthought. The real moment was watching one of them press the lock button from across the lot, hear the chirp, and just nod like the night had been salvaged.
It had.
