I got the call from a parking structure near a medical center. It was after 8pm on a weeknight. The owner had her kid with her, just discharged, and she was standing next to her 2006 Land Cruiser with a fob that had gone completely dark. No response on any button. She had already tried holding the key up to the ignition cylinder the way she vaguely remembered reading about once. Nothing.
By the time I pulled up, she had been waiting about thirty minutes. The truck itself was fine. The problem was isolated to the fob.
I popped the key head open right there in the structure. The CR2016 had leaked just enough to pit one of the battery contacts. The chip was intact, the blade was fine, but the remote circuit was getting no power at all. I cleaned the contact, seated a fresh cell correctly, and tested the buttons on the spot. Lock, unlock, back glass release, all working.
The ignition read the transponder without any issue once she turned the key. Engine came up clean.
From her call to her driving out was under forty-five minutes. The dealer was closed and would have been a next-morning appointment minimum. She didn't need a new key, just someone who could actually show up and diagnose it on site instead of defaulting to a full replacement. That is the whole job sometimes. Show up, look at the actual problem, fix that.
