2011 Toyota Land Cruiser Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near San Ysidro Village, just off the main stretch in San Ysidro. She owned a 2011 Land Cruiser and had just swapped in what she described as a brand new battery. The fob still would not unlock the doors from more than a foot away, and the door handle touch unlock had gone completely quiet.

She had already done the right instinct, but the wrong execution. When I got there and opened the fob, the new CR1632 was in, but it was cocked slightly to one side and one of the battery contact tabs was bent away from the cell. It was making contact just barely, enough to keep the key-not-detected warning off the dash most of the time, but not enough to run the proximity sensors or the touch handle at any normal distance.

I straightened the tab, reseated the battery flat, and closed the fob correctly. Then I walked every function before I said a word. Touch unlock on the driver handle. Touch unlock on the passenger handle. Lock button. Unlock button. Panic. Start button response with the fob in her hand at normal carry distance, not pressed against the dash.

Everything came back. She asked me what I had done differently than she did, and I told her honestly: same battery, different contact. The hardware was fine the whole time. She had just gotten unlucky with the pry angle.

That is the job I would rather do every time. No programming, no diagnostic port, no key cutting. Just the thing that actually needed fixing, done in a parking lot in San Ysidro in about twelve minutes.
