A properly programmed replacement should last as long as your original. The programming itself does not degrade. What does wear is the physical shell. If the shell cracks but the electronics are still good, the circuit board and battery assembly can often be transferred into a new housing for a lot less than a full key replacement. The internal emergency blade is also worth checking periodically. The release button that ejects it can get stiff, and finding that out in a parking lot after hours is the wrong time.

If both handles are inconsistent but the start button still reads the fob reliably, that points toward the antenna or wiring rather than the fob itself. Worth sorting out before assuming a new key solves it.
