Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2009 Toyota Land Cruiser Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was before six in the morning when the call came in from Buena Creek. A guy was already at the supply store lot on the Vista side, crew truck idling nearby, and his Land Cruiser would not acknowledge the fob at all.

Push-button did nothing. Touch unlock on the handles did nothing. He had gotten in using the emergency blade hidden in the fob, but the engine would not start because the system had no fob signal to clear.

I was there in under 30 minutes.

He met me in the lot still in his work gloves. The crew was loading up and he kept glancing over. I got the story fast: fob had been acting weak the past few days, shorter range, then nothing overnight.

I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR1632 inside was original - not a replacement, not a recent swap. Battery voltage had dropped far enough that the chip was not transmitting reliably. Swapped the cell, reseated the contacts, and tested range from across the lot. Handles woke up, push-button fired on the first press.

The system had also thrown a key-not-detected condition that needed to be cleared through the diagnostic port before the fob would register cleanly again, so I connected the tool and walked it through. Total hands-on time was around 25 minutes.

He was in the cab and following the crew out of the lot before 6:30. He asked what the dealer would have done. I told him they would have called it a key programming job, started a work order, and probably kept the truck until afternoon. He just nodded and drove off.
