2004 Toyota Land Cruiser
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Scam locksmiths have a pattern that is pretty easy to spot once you know it. They quote a low number on the phone and then invent charges once you are standing there with no other options. When you ask what tools they use for a specific Toyota, they go vague. They cannot tell you the process before they arrive.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The replacement remote head key gets programmed to communicate with your immobilizer and your remote receiver the same way the factory key does. Engine starts, doors lock and unlock, all of it. We test every function on the spot before the job is considered done. Start the truck, run the remote buttons, confirm the immobilizer accepted the new key cleanly. You are not taking it on faith. You watch it work before we leave.

Q: I have a spare key for my 2004 Land Cruiser but the remote buttons have never worked on it. Can that be fixed?

Yes, and this comes up a lot with these trucks. A key can be cut and carry a working transponder chip but never have been programmed to the remote receiver. Those are two separate systems. The chip side handles starting the engine. The remote side handles the lock and unlock buttons.

Q: My 2004 Land Cruiser starts fine but immediately stalls. Is this a key problem?

That start-then-stall pattern is a classic immobilizer symptom on these Toyotas. The engine fires because the key blade turned the ignition, then the immobilizer cuts fuel when it does not recognize the transponder chip. Could mean a worn or damaged chip in the key, a key that was never properly programmed, or a receiver that has lost the pairing. We diagnose this on site and handle it the same visit.

2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in the Richland area of San Marcos when this one came in. The owner of a 2004 Land Cruiser had texted me the VIN before I even left the house, which immediately put her ahead of most calls I get.

She had a working key, barely. The remote functions had been fading for weeks, lock and unlock getting shorter range, then nothing. The key still started the truck, so she had been living with it. Then the remote quit entirely, and a couple days later the truck hesitated on start. That spooked her enough to call.

When I got there, I checked the existing key first. The remote side was gone, and the chip side was reading weak. Not dead, but not reliable either. One of those situations where the working key is not really working.

I had the correct blank prepped on the drive over because she had sent me the VIN. Cut the replacement blade on site, programmed the new remote head key, and verified the immobilizer accepted it clean before I even handed it to her. Then I ran through the locks and ignition three times while she watched. Start, remote lock, remote unlock, start again. Every function confirmed.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait time of several days just to get the parts ordered. I was done in her driveway in under half an hour. The dealer comparison was not even something she brought up. I think she had already done that math before she called.

Toyota Land Cruiser Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Toyota vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California BSIS locksmith license and carries full insurance. For a 2004 Land Cruiser, the programming is handled through the OBD port with professional automotive key programming equipment. Not every locksmith has the right tools for Toyota remote head keys from this generation, so it is worth asking before anyone shows up at your door.
