Out near Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad, a guy flagged me down in a library parking lot. Not a call, not a booking. He had my card from someone else and had been waiting to see if I'd show up to another job nearby.
He told me he'd already paid a locksmith to program a new smart key for his 2017 Land Cruiser. The locksmith cut the blade, connected to the car, said it worked, and left. But every time he tried to start it, the engine would catch for about two seconds and then die. Same thing every attempt. He'd been told the problem was a bad module and that he needed a dealer.
The module was fine.
What had happened was the key registration hadn't completed properly. Toyota's immobilizer registration on this generation isn't just a write and done. It runs a security handshake with a seed-and-key calculation, and there's a timed sequence that has to finish before the new key is permanently stored. If you disconnect too early, or the sequence gets interrupted, the key can appear registered on the tool screen but never actually commits to the module's permanent memory. The car sees it as a temporary or failed entry and the immobilizer cuts the engine almost immediately after it fires.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed registration state, and ran a clean full sequence. Watched the tool confirm the key was permanently stored, not just written. Then I tested it: start, shut off, step away, start again, windows down and back up. Everything clean.
He'd already spent money on a job that didn't get finished. What I could offer was finishing it right, on the spot, with a tool screen he could read himself showing the key stored in permanent memory. That screen matters. It's the difference between done and almost done.
