2001 Toyota Prius
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Toyota Prius Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Lakeside, just off the Flinn Springs side, a woman called me about her 2001 Prius. She had the original key, still working, but the plastic head had cracked along the seam over the years and the key blank itself had a small nick near the tip she was worried about. She wanted a spare made before the original gave out entirely.

She had already called the dealer. They told her she would need to bring it in, leave it for a day, and wait for their tech to handle the programming. She did not want to do that. She works from home and the Prius is her only car.

I pulled up to her driveway with the right key blank for the vehicle and my cutting equipment. I decoded the existing key, cut the new blade to match, and used the onboard add-a-key procedure with her working original to enroll the new transponder chip. Started the car with the new key on the first try.

The part I always check after: I let the vehicle sit for a few minutes, then tried a cold start with just the new key. Some of these early Toyota transponder enrollments look good on the first try and then drop the registration after the car cycles down. Hers held. Both keys working, both confirmed.

She got a properly cut spare with a programmed chip, done in her own driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted. The dealer's estimate did not even account for the fact that she had a working key in hand, which makes the whole job faster.
